Pac-12 Championships in Full Swing as Bruins Head to Eugene

LOS ANGELES – Following the combined championships that were finished last weekend at Oregon State, the full slate of events for the 2017 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships will take place this weekend from May 13-14. The meet will be held at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
For the first time in history, the final day of the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships will be broadcast live. Coverage of the event will air on Sunday, May 14 starting at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT across Pac-12 Network, all regional channels and Pac-12 Now. Paul Sunderland (1984 Olympian), Tom Feuer (Emmy Award-winning Olympics producer), Jordan Kent (four-time track All-American at Oregon) and Jill Savage will cover the action.
The conference opponents headlining the Bruins' competition will certainly be Oregon and rival USC. On the men's side, the Ducks are ranked seventh in the national poll while the Trojans closely follow in eighth. UCLA checks in at No. 20. The Oregon women are second in the country and are closely followed by USC in third.The Bruin women will also need to watch out for Stanford (17), Arizona State (20) and Washington (23).
UCLA's men's and women's squads have posted superior marks throughout the regular season and look to continue this trend in Eugene. Here's how the Bruins stack up against the top marks across the conference.
On the track, junior Leon Powell is fourth in the conference in the 100-meters with his lifetime best time of 10.26 against USC. Sophomore Rai Benjamin is currently third in the PAC in the 400-meters after posting a strong 45.72 time. His 50.12 in the 400m-hurdles is currently second as well. Sophomore Arturo Sotomayor is second in the grueling 800-meter race with his time of 1:49.20 and senior Austin O'Neil leads the Pac-12 in the steeplechase with his time of 8:44.86.
Sophomore Pattriana Perry enters the weekend eighth in the conference in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.66 while fellow sophomore Julia Rizk is sixth in the 800m at 2:05.12. Freshman Jackie Garner is currently 10th in the Pac-12 in the 10,000-meters with a time of 34:58.47.
In the field events, sophomore Dotun Ogundeji leads the league in the shot put with his heave of 66-3. Junior Jessie Maduka also leads the conference in the triple jump with her lifetime best of 43-1. Freshman Mikella Lefevbre-Oatis rounds out the Bruin leaders with her conference-best mark of 6-0.75 in the high jump.
Junior Elleyse Garrett ranks third in the pole vault with her clearance of 13-8.25. Senior Zaybree Haury's impressive throw of 171-04 in the javelin puts her third in the Pac-12 while teammate Simon Litzell is second in the men's rankings with his mark of 225-8 in the event. Marian Spannowsky follows in fifth with his 222-11.
Following the Pac-12 Championships, the Bruins' postseason will continue with the NCAA Regionals beginning Thursday, May 25, at the University of Texas.
