UCLA Wraps Up Conference Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The UCLA track and field team wrapped up the first stage of the postseason by placing third in the men's competition and fifth against the women's field. The Bruins showcased another individual conference title and numerous podium honorees on Sunday at Historic Hayward Field.

Sophomore Rai Benjamin used a lifetime best and a photo-finish to take down two-time defending champion CJ Allen with a time of 49.52 to win the 400m hurdles. Benjamin used a strong first 300m and then secured the win with a final burst in the final five meters to win his first conference title. The time ranks fifth all-time in UCLA history.

In the field, freshman Isaiah Holmes concluded his impressive inaugural collegiate outdoor championship by placing fifth overall. The freshman leaped 49-2.25 in the triple jump to move his weekend point total to 22. CJ Alumbres followed in seventh place with a mark of 48-8.75.

In the women's triple jump, junior Jessie Maduka finished fourth with a mark of 42-8.75. UCLA secured some more points in the pole vault as junior Elleyse Garrett finished fourth with a clearance of 13-4.25. Sophomore Greta Wagner followed in seventh at 12-10.25.

Freshman Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis finished tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 5-7.75. Sophomore Lillianna Hebert was eighth at 5-5.75.

On the track, junior Misana Viltz took third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.99. Sophomore Pattriana Perry was seventh in the 100m hurdles with a 13.84.

The Bruins secured more key points in the 400m as freshman Logen Casavant was fifth with a time of 47.09. Junior Joe Herrera was eighth at 47.76. 

Junior Leon Powell followed with a fifth-place finish in the 100m with a time of 10.40. He came back to also place fifth in the 200m with a time of 20.87. Casavant was seventh at 21.32.

Sophomore Julia Rizk battled an impressive 800m field to place third overall with a time of 2:05.71. In the men's 5,000m, senior Austin O'Neil came back after his runner-up finish in the steeple to place sixth with a time of 14:06.03. 

The Bruins closed out the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400m with a time of 3:09.39. The women placed ninth with a 3:47.10.

The NCAA West Regional Championships will be held at the University of Texas and is slated to begin on Thursday, May 25.
