May 25, 2017 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas – On the first day of competition at the NCAA West Prelims, the UCLA track and field team had three javelin throwers qualify for the national championship meet in Eugene. On top of the national qualifiers, several Bruins took care of business on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
The day started off fast for the Bruins as the freshmen duo of Simon Litzell and Marian Spannowsky both qualified in the javelin. Litzell was seventh overall with a season-best throw of 226-10 (69.14m) while Spannowsky was ninth, also launching a season best of 226-1 (68.91m). The two throws cracked the UCLA top-10, ranking eighth and ninth, respectively.
Later in the day, senior Zaybree Haury punched her ticket to Eugene for the first time in her career as the UCLA record holder recorded a throw of 158-6 (48.33m).
The Bruins also handled their business on the track. Junior Leon Powell will move on to the quarterfinals in the 100m as he posted a time of 10.26 (+3.1w). Sophomore Rai Benjamin cruised to a heat victory to also qualify for the next round in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.83.
Freshman Logen Casavant extended his stay in Austin as he clocked a personal best 46.58 to move to the quarterfinals in the 400m. Sophomore Julia Rizk also advanced in the 800m as she ran a 2:08.48.
Despite not qualifying UCLA represented well in the pole vault. Junior Elleyse Garrett cleared a personal best 13-9.25 while sophomore Greta Wagner also made it over 13-9.25 – an outdoor personal best. In the long jump, freshman Isaiah Holmes just missed the national meet by placing 14th with a best of 25-1.75.
UCLA will return to the track for day two, starting with the men's shot put at 4:30 p.m. CT. The action on the track will also start at 4:30 with the 100m hurdles.
