UCLA Drops Regional Opening Game to Texas

LONG BEACH, Calif. โ Ryan Kreidler hit a solo home run, while Griffin Canning threw 7.2 innings as the UCLA baseball team fell to Texas, 3-2, in the opening game of the Long Beach Regional on Friday from Blair Field. The Bruins will play in an elimination game on Saturday at 1 p.m. (PT) against the loser of Long Beach State and San Diego State.
Trailing 3-1 in the ninth inning, the Bruins looked to extend the game starting with Michael Toglia hitting a one-out double to right-center field. After Chase Strumpf walked, Jack Stronach made it a one-run game with a single up the middle to plate Toglia from second base. However, Texas closer Beau Ridgeway would get the next two batters to pop out for the final outs of the game.
After three scoreless innings to begin the game, Texas scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Kacy Clemens for the Longhorns' first hit of the game.
UT added one more in the seventh inning to make the score 2-0 as Travis Jones capitalized on a pair of UCLA errors to reach third base and Bret Boswell brought him home with a single to left field.
UCLA cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the eighth inning as Kreidler hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the frame.
Nolan Kingham (10-4) earned the win for the Longhorns allowing one run in 7.2 innings of work with five strikeouts. Canning (7-4) suffered the loss tossing 7.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned, with six strikeouts. Ridgeway collected his 12th save of the season after throwing the final 1.1 innings.
UCLA (30-26) finished with two runs on eight hits and three errors, while Texas (38-22) ended with three runs on six hits with no errors.
Saturday's game will be streamed live on WatchESPN/ESPN3 at 1 p.m. (PT).
