TEMPE, Ariz. -- Ena Shibahara was named All-American for the 2017 season, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Thursday. The freshman completed her freshman season at No. 4 in the final Oracle/ITA Division I Women's National Singles Rankings.
Shibahara (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) went 40-7 during her debut campaign, including an 18-3 mark in dual-match play. The freshman, who played the duration of the dual-match year on Court 1, registered a 22-6 record against nationally-ranked opponents. Shibahara went 9-0 during Pac-12 play and won 12 consecutive matches from March 4 through the Bruins' NCAA opener on May 12. She recorded straight-set wins in the first two rounds of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship before her season ended at the hands of fellow All-American Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt.
In order to be selected as an ITA All-American, a singles player must be a top-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, reach the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship or finish in the Top 20 of the final Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings.
The All-American announcement marked the latest honor for Shibahara, who previously earned National and Regional Rookie of the Year awards by the ITA. She was also named Singles Player of the Year, Newcomer/Freshman of the Year and an All-Pac-12 First Team selection by the Pac-12.
