UCLA Offense Explodes in 8-1 Win over CSUB

August 13, 2017 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - No. 9 UCLA flexed its muscles against CSU Bakersfield, defeating the Roadrunners, 8-1, in an exhibition game at Drake Stadium Sunday night. Eight different Bruins scored and 24 players saw action in the contest, which was played in three 30-minutes periods.

UCLA had 21 shots on goal and 26 shots overall, more than tripling the Roadrunners' shot total of seven. Roadrunner goalkeeper Jordan Bertram made 13 saves, while UCLA's goalkeepers Teagan Micah and Lauren Brzykcy each had one save.

The Bruins received four goals from freshmen, as Delanie Sheehan, Marley Canales, Olivia Athens and Viviana Villacorta each found the back of the net. Another freshman, Issy Bellinghausen, recorded an assist.

Sheehan started the goal-scoring onslaught in the 21st minute, taking a pass from Jessie Fleming and shooting past the goalkeeper to the bottom left corner. Five minutes later, Sheehan returned the favor, setting up Fleming for a similar goal. Canales netted her first goal as a Bruin in the 33rd minute, converting a penalty kick to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.

CSU Bakersfield scored its lone goal in the 44th minute with a Jordan Martinez goal to cut the lead to 3-1, but Athens answered in the 52nd minute, receiving an Anika Rodriguez cross in front of the goal and tapping it in for the 4-1 lead.

The Bruins scored four goals in the first 13 minutes of the third period. Villacorta scored off a steal at 61:19. Less than half a minute later, Rodriguez scored near post off a Zoey Goralski cross. Hailie Mace made it 7-1 with a goal in the 73rd minute and then assisted Chloe Castaneda on her second goal of the weekend in the 74th minute.

UCLA officially opens the season on Friday, Aug. 18 with a home match against San Diego State at Drake Stadium. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Network at 7pm. Tickets to the match are available at uclabruins.com/tickets.
