LOS ANGELES -- Ayan Broomfield will join the UCLA women's tennis team as a transfer from Clemson, head coach Stella Sampras-Webster has announced. Broomfield will join the team as a junior for the 2017-18 season after signing a scholarship agreement.
"We are really excited to add Ayan to the roster," Sampras Webster said. "She brings depth to our lineup, as well as valuable experience playing in a tough conference like the ACC."
The Toronto, Canada native completed her sophomore campaign with the Tigers slotted at No. 93 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. She reached a season best of No. 40 on Jan. 4. Broomfield recorded a 19-15 record on the season, including an 11-11 dual-match mark playing primarily on Court 1. She won five matches against ranked opponents, including an upset triumph over No. 4 Sara Daavettila of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3 (March 3).
In doubles, Broomfield flourished with a record of 23-7. Along with partner Marie Leduc, the pair tallied a 16-4 mark on Court 1. Broomfield-Leduc completed the year ranked No. 32 in the Oracle/ITA doubles rankings and reached a season-high No. 31. The standout performance for the sophomores was a season-closing sweep of Vanderbilt's top-ranked team of Astra Sharma and Emily Smith, 6-0.
Broomfield registered a 12-10 singles record in 2015-16, playing a majority of her debut season on the top court.
"Ayan's a tremendous competitor," Sampras Webster added. "She constantly faces off against the toughest competition in both singles and doubles play, and never backs down."
