MADISON, Wis. โ The sixth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dropped its Big Ten Conference opener to Wisconsin Friday in a 4-3 thriller at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Bruins entered play winners of four matches in a row.
A three-set result on Court 6 was the difference, with Kaede Usui of the Badgers (8-2, 1-0 Big Ten) collecting the victory. UCLA (6-3, 0-1) dropped the doubles point, but rebounded to take a 2-1 lead in singles play. Wisconsin answered with two wins of its own before the Bruins' Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer took down the nation's 17th-ranked player to send it the distance.
The Badgers secured the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins. First to finish was the matchup on Court 3, where Rangan/Kรกja Jacobson beat Kayla Chung/Mayu Crossley. Clinching was Usui/Maria Sholokhova, which topped Lutkemeyer/Ahmani Guichard on the second court.
UCLA got back into the match with four singles first sets. Two of those soon turned into straight-set victories, with Guichard first to finish. The junior earned her team-high 11th singles win going back to tournament play, besting Kรกja Jacobson 6-1, 6-3 on Court 5. An identical scoreline was posted moments later by No. 108 Bianca Fernandez, who improved to 6-1 in dual singles play with her triumph over Ellison Reynoldson on Court 4.
Wisconsin retook the lead with two straight-set victories of its own. Rangan defeated Fakih 6-3, 6-2 on Court 3. Then, in a top-60 faceoff on Court 2, No. 56 Ekaterina Ivanova snapped No. 54 Crossley's five-match winning streak with a 6-2, 6-4 display.
No. 40 Lutkemeyer continued to be a force at the top of the Bruins' lineup, with her latest ranked win a 6-4, 7-6(4) performance opposite No. 17 Sholokhova. Lutkemeyer pushed her winning streak to four matches โ all versus ranked players.
Three breaks of serve started the third set on Court 6. Usui held for the next game and rode that advantage to a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 decider over Olivia Center.
UCLA will try to bounce back and even its Big Ten mark Sunday at Minnesota. First serve from Baseline Tennis Center is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT.
