UCLA Defeats Long Beach State, 5-1

Long Beach, Calif. - UCLA scored five goals for the second-straight game to defeat Long Beach State, 5-1. Freshman Delanie Sheehan scored two goals, and sophomore Jessie Fleming had a goal and two assists.
Fleming put UCLA on the board just 2:47 into the game. Viviana Villacorta started the play with a pass to Olivia Athens, who one-timed a through ball to Fleming in the box. Fleming took aim at the lower right corner to score her second goal in as many games.
Great passing by Hailie Mace and Fleming led to the Bruins' second goal at 22:19. Mace hit Fleming with a through ball on the left side, and Fleming found Sheehan open in the box. Sheehan fired a shot on frame that Long Beach State goalkeeper Imani McDonald got a hand on, but it wasn't enough to stop the ball from trickling in the back of the net for Sheehan's first collegiate goal.
Long Beach State (0-1-1) cut the Bruins' lead in half just three minutes into the second half on a goal by Katie Pingel, whose shot to the upper right corner beat Teagan Micah.
Sheehan struck again in the 69th minute, taking a loose ball and one-timing it to the far post past McDonald for her second goal of the game. MacKenzie Cerda increased the Bruin lead to 4-1 after taking a pass from Fleming and firing past the goalkeeper to the right corner in the 75th minute.
The Bruins' fifth goal was due to a brilliant effort by Anika Rodriguez to blow past her defender on the wing and serve up the perfect cross to Julia Hernandez in the box. Hernandez one-timed the ball into the upper corner for her team-leading third goal of the year.
UCLA (2-0-0) will host Santa Clara on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 7pm at Drake Stadium.
