Budgett, Edwards Help Great Britain to Gold Medal
August 09, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Rising juniors Saskia Budgett and Kyra Edwards both played major roles in helping Great Britain win a gold medal at the Under 23 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Budgett and Edwards, who both rowed at the Under 23 Championships in the Netherlands last summer, helped Great Britain win the gold medal in this year's event in the 4x. Budgett competed in the championship race, while Edwards participated in preliminary 4x heats, posting the fastest racing time before being sidelined for the final race due to extreme illness.
In the championship race, Budgett rowed three seat in the 4x (women's quadruple sculls) and helped Great Britain post a first-place time of 6:22.870. Great Britain's crew crossed the finish line ahead of second-place Australia (6:24.700) and Germany (6:25.360). The final three teams in the six-boat final included Romania, the Netherlands and the United States.
Both Budgett and Edwards have rowed in UCLA's varsity eight crew during their freshman and sophomore seasons. Both UCLA rowers were among 56 athletes who were competing for Great Britain at the 2017 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
