No. 4 UCLA Rallies to Beat No. 7 UCSB, 10-5

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to outscore seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara 10-2 to post a 10-5 victory on Friday night at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 8-0 while the Gauchos dropped to 4-3 on the year.

Freshman Nicolas Saveljic led the Bruins in scoring with four goals while senior Alex Roelse added a hat trick. Sophomore Alex Wolf got the start and played the entire game, registering a season-high 15 saves while allowing five goals.

Shane Hauschild got the Gauchos on the board first with a cross-cage score from the front court (7:31). Chad Nelson then gave the Gauchos a 2-0 lead with a power play goal (2:42). Jacob Halle put UCSB up 3-0 with another power play goal (0:37). The Bruins finally got on the board with an exclusion goal from senior Alex Roelse (0:08) to end the scoring in the first with the Gauchos leading 3-1.

Freshman Nicolas Saveljic scored the first goal of the second period (4:23) on a power play to cut the lead to 3-2. Then Saveljic tied the game at 3-3 (3:26) with a penalty shot. Freshman Felix Brozyna-Vilim beat the Gauchos' goalie with a perfect lob shot (2:37) to give the Bruins their first lead at 4-3. Then Roelse added his second on a 6-on-5 opportunity (1:44) to make it five straight goals for UCLA, leading 5-3. Boris Jovanovic ended the scoring in the first half with a power play score (1:09) to cut the lead to 5-4. 

The Bruins pitched a shutout in the third with Saveljic netting two more scores (7:30 and 0:57) to bring his total to four on the night. Roelse completed his hat trick to put the Bruins up 7-4 (4:03) and then freshman Evan Rosenfeld scored on a counter (2:09) to push the lead to 8-4. Saveljic's fourth goal ended the scoring in the third at 9-4.

UCLA opened the final period with a score from junior Warren Snyder off a nice feed from freshman Luke Henriksson (6:26) to extend the lead to 10-4. Ivan Gvozdanovic trimmed the lead to 10-5 (4:25) with a score from distance to provide the 10-5 final.

The Bruins return to action on Frdiay, Sept. 22 with their first game of the Mountain Pacific Invitational at No. 20 Loyola Marymount at 2:40 p.m. PT.
