IRVINE, Calif. --ย Top-ranked UCLA dropped its first game of the 2017 season with a 9-8 setback at No. 7 UC Irvine at the Anteaters Aquatics Complex on Saturday afternoon. Robby Stieffel tied the game at 5-5 with yet another power play goal (6:28) to open the scoring in the third and then Antoine Lena scored on a counter (3:39) to regain the lead for the Anteaters, 6-5. That score held until the start of the fourth.

Senior Matt Farmer scored from two meters (7:13) to tie the game at 6-6. But Schuetzeย scored his fourth of the game (6:58) from the front court to put UCI up 7-6. Senior Max Irving scored from the front court (4:10) to tie the game at 7-7. But again UCI got a power play goal (3:33) to regain the lead at 8-7, this time from Lena, his second of the game.
