September 05, 2017 | Football
The Tournament of Roses announced on Tuesday that quarterback Cade McNown will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in the Class of 2017.
ย
The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at noon PT on December 30, 2017, outside of the Rose Bowl Stadium, two days prior to the kickoff of the 2018 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. This year's game will feature two of the top four teams in the country, with the matchup of the No. 1 and No. 4 teams or the No. 2 versus No. 3, on Monday, January 1.
ย
McNown, who led the Bruins to the 1997 and 1998 Pac-10 championships, finished his career as the conference's career leader in total offense (11,285 yards) and was also third in career passing yardage (10,708 yards). He quarterbacked the Bruins to a school record 20 straight wins over the course of the 1997 and 1998 seasons, posting a 30-14 record as a starter. Following the 1997 season, McNown helped to engineer a comeback win over Texas A&M in the 1998 Cotton Bowl. He finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting that year.
ย
In 1998, the Bruins posted a 10-2 record, which tied the school record for wins for the second straight season, and were voted the number one team in the nation in the first-ever BCS Championship poll. In the 1999 Rose Bowl Game, McNown threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns as the Bruins set a single-team Rose Bowl record for most total yards (538). He still holds the UCLA career marks for most yards of total offense (515) in a game and for the most passing yards in a game (513).
ย
NcNown was named a consensus 1998 All-American, the Pac-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year and the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. He was third in the voting for the 1998 Heisman Trophy and went on to be selected in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
ย
McNown will become the 10th Bruin to be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, joining John Sciarra, Bob Stiles, Gary Beban, Eric Ball, Rick Neuheisel, Tom Ramsey, Al Hoisch, Terry Donahue and Dick Vermeil.
ย
Joining McNownย in the Class of 2017 will be Mack Brown (Texas), Charles Woodson (Michigan) and Dr. Charles West (Washington & Jefferson). The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to pay tribute to members of the Rose Bowl Game who have contributed to the history and excitement of the game, and those who embody the highest level of passion, strength, tradition and honor associated with The Granddaddy of Them Allยฎ. With the addition of this year's class, the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame includes 125 inductees over its 29-year history. Inductees are honored with a permanent plaque that includes their name and year of induction at The Court of Champions at the Rose Bowl Stadium, they are featured during the Rose Paradeยฎ presented by Hondaยฎ, and are recognized on the field during the Rose Bowl Game.
ย
ย "These four individuals epitomize what the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl Game stand for," said Tournament of Roses Football Committee Chair Brad Ratliff. "This class has exhibited strength, passion, tradition and honor in relation to college football, but also in making a difference in their communities."
