CHICAGO - Incoming freshman Devon Chang was named 2017-18 Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year, as announced on Tuesday.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Chang as California's best high school volleyball player. Chang, who is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced later in January, led Santa Margarita Catholic High School to a 34-9 record and the Division I state championship last season. She totaled 1,171 assists, 361 digs, 85 kills, 82 blocks and 31 service aces. A 2017 Under Armour Second Team All-American, Chang was also the Orange County Player of the Year and a First Team MaxPreps All-American.
Chang has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, a youth literacy initiative and Families Forward, which assists homeless families. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
