PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - The top-ranked Bruins were one of only two teams to not shoot over par on Monday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, as UCLA finished its second round in a share of the lead. Individually, three Bruins are inside the Top 10 after 36 holes, including freshman Patty Tavatanakit, who is one off the lead.
UCLA is tied with Alabama at 8-over 576. Both teams were seven shots back of Arizona and Arizona State heading into the second round, but will go into Tuesday's final round one shot ahead of Arizona (+9) after the Bruins and the Crimson Tide each posted rounds of 284.
Tavatanakit tied for the third-lowest round of the day with a 2-under 69 to put her into a tie for second (-2, 140). She is one stroke back of ASU's Olivia Mehaffey (-3, 139). Tavatanakit recorded six birdies, three on each side, gaining strokes on #4, #5 and #7, as well as #10, #14 and #16. The freshman added four bogeys.
Junior Beth Wu is tied for fourth at even-par 142, three back of the lead, posting a 1-over 72 on Monday. She was very steady, making one birdie on #11, a pair of bogeys and 15 pars.
Junior Lilia Vu joins Tavatanakit and Wu in the Top 10, recording a 2-under 69 to put her at 2-over 144 and in a tie for ninth. She jumped 30 spots in the standings from her first round thanks to making four birdies on #1, #7, #12 and #16, adding a pair of bogeys. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano recorded a 3-over 74 and is tied for 54th at +10 (152). She had four birdies on Monday on #5, #7, #12 and #16 to go with five bogeys and a double bogey. Senior Joo Seo is tied for 64th (+13, 155) and had the highlight of the round for the Bruins, making an eagle on the par-4, 322-yard 17th. She also had eight bogeys and a double for an 8-over 79. Senior Erin Choi, playing as an individual, is tied for 83rd after shooting an 82 (+11), making eight bogeys and a triple.
Round three on Tuesday will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m., with Tavatanakit opening on the first hole, Vu and Wu on the second, Galdiano on the third and Seo on the fourth.
