Setter Micah Ma'a has been named the Sports Imports / American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I-II National Men's Volleyball Player of the Week.The junior guided the Bruins to a .443 team hitting percentage while averaging 12.5 set assists per set in three winning outings during the week, including the first two conference matches of the year at No. 10 Grand Canyon and Concordia. UCLA now owns a 13-1 record which is its best start since the 2005 team opened with wins in 15 of the first 16 matches that season.
UCLA has hit at least .400 as a team in each of its last five matches. Ma'a added 17 digs and 15 kills, while hitting .667 on the week, with a season-high of five kills in each contest. He handed out an average of 12.5 assists per set during the three matches and added a total of four service aces. At the net, he recorded his first block solo of the season and totaled five block assists.
In this week's NCAA statistical rankings, Ma'a emerged as the national leader in set assists with a 10.94 assists per set average. The Bruin team ranks second in the nation in hitting percentage with a .363 mark. Ma'a also is listed 11th in the NCAA in service aces per set with a 0.51 average which leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
Ma'a will lead the No. 2-ranked Bruins into an MPSF battle on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion against USC. UCLA will then go on the road to meet No. 1-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
