Women's Tennis to Host Reunion March 16-18

Women's Tennis

Open to all former players and Bruin Aces supporters, weekend will celebrate 2008 champions and life of former coach Zaima.

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's tennis program will bring past and present together March 16-18, 2018, for a special alumni weekend celebration. The three-day reunion event will culminate with the current Bruins' Sunday dual match versus Oregon at Los Angeles Tennis Center (LATC).

All UCLA women's tennis alumnae, along with Bruin Aces supporters, are invited to participate in the festivities, which feature tours of campus and its facilities, an alumnae-current team mixer and a banquet beside NCAA Championship trophy No. 102 in the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. To RSVP, email uclatennisreunion@cmpr.net.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first NCAA Championship in UCLA women's tennis history. The Bruins went 24-5 and won 15 of their last 16 matches under head coach Stella Sampras Webster. They also swept five of six postseason matches, including a 4-0 final-round win over No. 8 California at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Bruins Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda earned the NCAA Doubles Championship.

The weekend will also serve as a tribute to former head coach Bill Zaima, who guided the Bruins as head coach for 16 years and spent 38 years at UCLA in some capacity. In addition to compiling an impressive head-coaching record of 245-90 (.731), Zaima aided then-head coach Gayle Godwin in leading the Bruins to the 1981 Association for Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. His star pupils included Sampras Webster, who was a four-time All-American under the legendary coach and followed him in the head coach's chair. Zaima once again returned to coaching in 2000, assisting Sampras Webster for 13 years, including the 2008 NCAA Championship season. Zaima passed away in 2016.
