Last season, CSUN defeated the Bruins in five sets in Pauley Pavilion (20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 15-9). Dylan Missry had a career-high 21 kills in the contest.  CSUN banged out eight service aces in the match and outhit the Bruins .263 to .199 and out blocked UCLA 12.5 to 10.5 for the night. 

The Bruins begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. match at Concordia, Irvine (3-3).

The two teams met last season in the Wooden Center and the Bruins came away with a five-set win (25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9). Jake Arnitz led UCLA with 17 kills and six block assists, while Missry added 14 kills and three aces in a 19.5-point effort.

Last week, UCLA completed a season sweep of UC Irvine on Saturday night in a four-set decision at Irvine (25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19). The Bruins hit a season-best .455 and were led by Christian Hessenauer's 15 kills. Daenan Gyimah (.619) and JT Hatch (.500) added 14 kills each. Missry added a season-best 13 kills. UCLA opened last week by defeating Princeton in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-16) while equaling the school records with 15 service aces in the match and seven aces in both set two and three. Setter Micah Ma'a led the way with a season-best six aces while Missry added four. 

Freshman libero Garland Peed was named the Molten / MPSF Defensive Player of the Week after leading the team in digs in both of last week's wins. He also handled 42 of 43 serve receptions without an error. Gyimah (Middle Attacker) and Ma'a (setter), who set the Bruins to a .434 hitting % for the week were named Off the Block National Position Players of the Week. Gyimah is ranked third in the nation this week in hitting percentage at .486. UCLA is fourth in the nation in hitting percentage coming into the week (.343). Ma'a is second in the NCAA in set assists/s at 10.56 and is T11th in NCAA in service aces/s (0.54). The Bruin team is now second in the nation in service aces (2.00) per set.  Ma'a was also selected VolleyMob National Player of the Week. 

 UCLA held steady at No. 2 in this week's AVCA poll after being picked No. 4 in the AVCA Preseason Poll and second in the Coaches' Preseason Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) poll.  In 2017, UCLA finished fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) standings and was No. 6 in the final AVCA National Poll.

NEW LOOK LEAGUE
 Concordia and Grand Canyon have been added to the MPSF this season to replace teams (Long Beach St., UC Santa Barbara, CSUN, UCSD, Hawai'i, UC Irvine) which left to form the Men's Volleyball Big West Conference. Each MPSF team has 12 conference matches on its 2018 schedule, which features a home-and-away contest against each opponent. The 2018 MPSF Championship Tournament begins with seeds two, three and four hosting a quarterfinal match on April 14. The conference semifinals are on April 19, on the home floor of the No. 1 seed. The top seed will host the lowest remaining available seed. The Championship match will take place on April 21, at the same site, with the winner earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament which will be hosted by UCLA on May 3 and 5 in Pauley Pavilion.
