Los Angeles – The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday that five UCLA field athletes earned All-America honors for their performances at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships over the weekend. First-team accolades were granted to student-athletes who finished in the Top 8 in the finals of their events, while second-team honors were reserved for those who placed 9-16 overall.
Senior triple jumper Jessie Maduka and junior shot putter Ashlie Blake took home first-team All-America honors for UCLA. Maduka finished third at the Indoor Championships with a lifetime-best mark of 13.81m (45-03.75). The mark broke her own indoor school record in the triple jump. Blake finished seventh overall in the shot put finals with a throw of 17.07m (56-00.00). These are the first USTFCCCA Indoor All-America honors for both student-athletes.
Freshman Alyssa Wilson took home the third accolade for the UCLA women's squad, earning second-team All-America honors in her first collegiate track and field season. Wilson, the only freshman in the shot put finals, finished 14th overall with a throw of 17.30m (56-09.25). She also finished the indoor season as the top-ranked freshman in the country in the shot put with her mark of 17.30m (56-09.25), set in a third-place effort at the Don Kirby Invite.
The UCLA men's indoor squad added two more second-team Indoor All-America honors. Redshirt freshman Nate Esparza and junior Dotun Ogundeji both made the final of the shot put, finishing 12th and 13th, respectively, to make the USTFCCCA second team. Esparza threw 18.79m (61.07.75) in the final, while Ogundeji went 18.54m (60-10.00). Ogundeji has now earned second-team honors in three consecutive indoor seasons. This is the first USTFCCCA All-America accolade for Esparza.
