LOS ANGELES -- UCLA juniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara (Vancouver, BC, Canada) were named the National Pair of the Week by DiG Magazine today.
The duo helped then-No. 2 UCLA run its winning streak to 19-consecutive duals, going 6-0 last week, defeating six ranked teams. UCLA had a huge six days defeating No. 1 Pepperdine, 4-1, and then rolling through the Surf 'N' Turf Invitational hosted by Florida International in Miami, Fla.
The Bruins parlayed additional victories over No. 7 Florida State (4-1), No. 12 Florida International (4-1), No. 18 Florida Atlantic (5-0), No. 11 Grand Canyon (5-0) and No. 8 South Carolina (5-0) into a unanimous pick as the No. 1 team in the DiG Magazine poll this week, the first time in the history of the program that UCLA has been ranked No. 1.
UCLA lost just three sets in six matches against ranked teams. The Bruins lead the nation in victories with 24 and have won 19 straight duals.
The McNamaras have been the hottest team in the nation, winning 15 straight matches playing in the No. 1 slot. One of the McNamara wins was a 21-17, 23-21 triumph over last week's National Pair of the Week, Fedrica Frasca and Margherita Bianchin of Florida International.
