LOS ANGELES – After scoring two goals and five points in No. 17 UCLA's season-opening contest at No. 18 Coastal Carolina last Friday, freshman midfielder Matt Hundley was honored as both the Pac-12 Player of the Week and the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) had previously been named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week, one of just two freshmen to be honored.
With his five-point outburst, Hundley became the second Bruin in the last three years to record five points in a single game (Alex Knox: Oct.26, 2017 vs. Oregon St) and the first UCLA player to notch five points on Opening Day since current assistant coach Matt Taylor recorded a hat trick in the first game of the 2003 season.
Hundley opened the scoring against the Chanticleers in the 24th minute, collecting an Anderson Asiedu pass near the penalty spot, dribbling to his left before uncorking a left-footed – his off-foot – shot inside the far post. That tally held up as the game-winner, though Hundley was far from finished.
The Colorado Rapids academy product doubled UCLA's lead in the 71st minute, knuckling a 40-yard free kick into the top right corner of the net.
Not content for two highlight-reel plays, Hundley played teammate Mohammed Kamara into a breakaway situation in the 78th minute, with the latter hitting a moonshot chip over the CCU keeper and in for a goal that ended up as No. 2 on Friday night's Sportscenter Top 10.
These are Hundley's first Pac-12 and UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week awards of the season and his career.
Also nominated for the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week were Teagan Micah (Women's Soccer) and Jenny Mosser (Women's Volleyball).
Hundley wasn't the only Bruin to pick up an honor on Tuesday, as senior defender and team captain Erik Holt was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. The Preseason All-American led the Bruin defense that held a clean sheet against Coastal Carolina. He also contributed to UCLA's opening goal, playing a ball from the back down the right win for Anderson Asiedu, who recorded the primary assist on the play.
Hundley and the rest of the Bruins host San Diego on Tuesday night in the Wallis Annenberg Stadium home opener. The match, televised by the Pac-12 Networks, is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. kickoff.
