Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit of the UCLA women's golf team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 17-23.
Tavatanakit blistered the Royal Golf Club on Sept. 19, firing a 9-under 63 to come back and win the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. She set a new course record and tied UCLA's single-round mark that Lilia Vu set in 2017.
Tavatanakit, who started her final round tied for ninth and seven shots back of the lead, was even par through her first eight holes after making bogey on the fourth and birdie on the seventh. Then the sophomore kicked it into high gear, making seven consecutive birdies (No. 9-15) to get into contention. Following a couple of pars on No. 16 and 17, she trailed USC's Malia Nam by one shot, needing a birdie on the par-5 18th to tie or an eagle to win. She made a three on the 18th on Tuesday and would do it again on Wednesday, sinking a 12-foot putt to record the fifth victory of her career. Tavatanakit helped the Bruins finish in second place at 26-under 838, which established a new school record for a 54-hole event.
This is Tavatanakit's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week of the season and the third of her career.
Also nominated: Frankie Amaya (Men's Soccer), Jack Ireland (Men's Golf), Mac May (Women's Volleyball), Karina Rodriguez (Women's Soccer), Nicholas Saveljic (Men's Water Polo).
