LOS ANGELES – U.S. Soccer has recalled UCLA freshman midfielder Frankie Amaya to the U-20 Men's National Team for a tournament taking place at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. on Sept. 7, 9, and 11.
Amaya, a Santa Ana native, will join the U-20 MNT after UCLA's game at Maryland on Friday, Sept. 7.
The creative midfielder made his debut with the U-20s earlier this year, receiving a call-up for a two-week training camp in Spain in March. During that trip, he scored against France for his first U-20 goal and also played against Atletico Madrid's U-21 team.
Each of the match days – Sept. 7, 9 and 11 – will feature a doubleheader (8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. PT) with the U-20 MNT playing the second game each day. The winner of the competition will be based on total points. Tie-breakers will first be overall goal difference and then total goals scored. The U-20s are set to face the U.S. U-19 MNT on Sunday, Sept. 9 and Venezuela on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
The U.S. U-20s are in the middle of the 2019 World Cup cycle with the Concacaf U-20 Men's Championship on the horizon. The tournament, which will qualify four teams for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, will take place at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. from Nov. 1-21. The draw for the tournament is set to be held on Sept. 13.
Amaya has appeared as a substitute in all three of UCLA's games so far this season. He was most effective in the Bruins' home opener against San Diego, collecting a primary assist on Mohammed Kamara's second goal. He was the No. 6 prospect nationally and the top prospect from Southern California in his class after a standout club career with Pateadores SC.
