Bruins Blank Wolfpack on Day 1 of ITA Kick-Off

January 26, 2018 | Women's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. โ€“ The No. 16 UCLA women's tennis team registered a convincing 4-0 win over North Carolina State Friday on Day 1 of ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bruins fought back from a deficit in doubles play before sweeping all singles matches on the Boone Tennis Complex's four indoor courts.

It was a big day for the Bruins' Ayan Broomfield, who joined forces with Terri Fleming to clinch the doubles point before clinching the overall result in singles play, as well.

In a battle of Top-10 doubles teams, the Wolfpack's ninth-ranked duo of Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin defeated the Bruins' seventh-ranked pair of Jada Hart and Ena Shibahara, 6-2, on Court 1. Alaina Miller and Gabby Andrews would answer, however, dispatching Bianca Moldovan and Helene Grimm, 6-4, to put the pressure on the Court 2 teams.

Broomfield and Fleming trailed Amanda Rebol and Adriana Reami, 6-5, with the elusive doubles point on the line. The Bruins bounced back, though, forcing a tiebreak to decide it. From there, Broomfield and Fleming ran away with it, picking up the doubles point with a 7-0 blanking of the Wolfpack pair.

From there, the Bruin singles lineup was a force to be reckoned with. No. T100 Fleming started by sending NC State's Helene Grimm off by a 6-4, 6-1 tally. In her first action of the dual-match season, No. 16 Shibahara added a straight-set win of her own, knocking off Rogers, 6-2, 6-4. No. 119 Hart appeared poised to pick up the clinching win on Court 2, as she led Reami by a 6-4, 5-2 score, but Broomfield proved quicker. The Clemson transfer upset No. 61 Wiktorin on Court 4, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch.

With four courts at the Boone Tennis Complex, the matches on Courts 5 and 6 were nixed following the clincher.

UCLA will take on Northwestern Saturday (10 a.m., PT), with a chance to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line. The Wildcats upset host No. 21 Kentucky by a 4-0 score Friday morning.
