No. 6 Men's Tennis Dispatches of UC Davis, 4-0
January 27, 2018 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team moved one step closer to qualifying for next month's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors on Saturday, dispatching of visiting UC Davis, 4-0 in its opening-round match of ITA Kick Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins will earn a spot in the Team Indoors with a win over Utah State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Aggies downed UCF, 4-2 in their first-round match earlier Saturday.
Doubles was somewhat close on Saturday, with the Utah State (1-3) actually pulling off an upset at court No. 2, where Everett Maltby and Ivan Thamma were able to notch a 6-2 win over UCLA's Ben Goldberg and Keegan Smith. The Bruins, however, were in control at the other two courts, as the tandems of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu (court No. 1) and Maxime Cressy and Bryce Pereira (court No. 3) each posted 6-3 wins to give UCLA the doubles point.
With the doubles point in hand, UCLA (5-0) looked to extend its dominance into singles action, as the Bruins currently feature three players with ITA singles rankings, led by the nation's No. 1 player in Redlicki.
UCLA took five of six first sets to set the tone in singles. Logan Staggs, the nation's 55th-ranked player, was first to finish his match at court No. 4, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead by downing Jonathan Star, 6-2, 6-3. Next door at court No. 5, Cressy turned in an even more dominating performance, losing just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Chethan Swanson.
The freshman Smith, who is ranked No. 108 nationally, ended up getting the clinching win for the Bruins at court No. 2, dispatching of David Goulak, 6-4, 6-4 to give UCLA an insurmountable 4-0 advantage.
Three matches were halted in the second set at the time of Smith's clinching victory. Redlicki was within a game of winning at court No. 1, where he led Thamma, 7-6(3), 5-2. Zhu was up a set at court No. 3, and Goldberg had dropped the first set at court No. 6.
Prior to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. UCLA-Utah State showdown, UCF and UC Davis will be playing a consolation match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at 9:00 a.m. Both matches on Sunday are free to attend.
