Ma'a and Gyimah Share MPSF Honors

Junior setter Micah Ma'a and sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah were voted Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Men's Volleyball Players of the Week on Monday.ย Ma'a was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Gyimah was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week after UCLA snapped Hawaii's 26-match home court win streak with a four-set win on Sunday night.
Ma'a set the Bruins to a .396 hitting percentage with 46 set assists, six digs and two block assists in the win which halted Hawai'i's 26-match home court winning streak. One of his digs turned into his final set assist as he saved a ball on the other side of the net, while crashing into the scoring table, and it became a set assist for a kill which gave UCLA a 31-30 lead in the decisive fourth set. In set three, the Bruins had no hitting errors on 27 swings while Ma'a recorded 14 assists and the team hit .593. The junior led UCLA to a combined hitting percentage of .481 in Sets 2-4. He had five digs to go with three block assists in the loss to the Warriors. Ma'a totaled 83 set assists for the week and added six aces which moved him into third-place on the all-time school list (101). UCLA hit .303 as a team for the two matches. This is the first weekly award for Ma'aย in his Bruin career.
Gyimah led UCLA at the nets in its split at No. 3-ranked Hawai'i. He recorded a career-best nine block assists in the opening match of the series. He added a team-best nine kills and hit .438 for the contest. In UCLA's win, Gyimah added three kills, a block solo and three block assists. He hit .391 for the week and is now ranked third in the nation in the category (.465). This is the second straight week in which Gyimah has merited Player of the Week honors.
UCLA, 8-1 on the year, will host Princeton on February 1 at 7 p.m. in the Wooden Center before heading down to play at No. 4 UC Irvine (9-1) on Saturday night in the final week of play before starting MPSFย league action on the road Feb. 8 at Concordia.
