UCLA Wins Fourth-Straight in 2-0 Shutout over Washington

October 12, 2018 | Women's Soccer

The No. 10 UCLA women's soccer team won its fourth-straight, defeating Washington in Seattle on Friday night, 2-0, behind goals from Ashley Sanchez and Delanie Sheehan.

The Bruins (9-3-1, 4-2-0 in the Pac-12) scored the game's first goal after a quick restart. Marley Canales played a give-and-go with Olivia Athens, who found Sanchez unmarked on the right side. Sanchez dribbled up the box and beat Washington goalkeeper Siena Ruelas for her fourth goal of the season.

Sheehan's goal in the 83rd minute was an impressive individual effort. The sophomore midfielder sliced her way through the Washington defense, eluding several defenders before firing a shot far post that beat Ruelas for her third goal of the year.

The score could have been more lopsided had it not been for Ruelas. With the Bruins up just 1-0 in the 50th minute, she made an impressive series of saves to keep the Bruins off the board. Julia Hernandez had the first shot just in front of goal, but Ruelas rushed to save the shot. Kennedy Faulknor followed with a cross that Ruelas punched away. The clearance was sent right to Viviana Villacorta's foot, and she one-timed a shot that Ruelas again got a hand on. Chloe Castaneda took a shot in front of goal that Ruelas stopped, and then Sanchez hit a shot that was blocked by a Washington defender before finally being cleared out of danger.

Washington (7-6-1, 2-4-0) had its best chance to tie in the 71st minute when Asia Brisco one-timed a shot towards the right corner, but Bruin goalkeeper Teagan Micah dove to her left to bat the ball out of play. Micah finished the game with four saves and her fifth solo shutout of the season.

The Bruins return home for their last regular season home series of the year. UCLA will host Oregon on Thursday, Oct. 18 on Breast Cancer Awareness Night before welcoming Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 21 for Senior Day.
