LOS ANGELES โ Seven members of the UCLA women's tennis team will travel south this week to take part in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the University of San Diego's Barnes Tennis Center. Play begins Thursday, Oct. 18 and runs through Monday, Oct. 22.
Seniors Gabby Andrews, Ayan Broomfield and Alaina Miller, junior Jada Hart, sophomore Abi Altick and freshmen Elysia Bolton and Alaina Miller will all participate in the singles portion of the competition, while all but LaFrance will play doubles. The winner of each competition is destined for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
Each Bruin will have a first-round bye in singles action Thursday before debuting in the second round later in the day. The tandems of Bolton-Hart, Altick-Miller and Andrews-Broomfield will also sit out the opening round of the doubles tournament before getting started Thursday at 9 a.m., PT.
Bruins make up three of the singles draw's top seven seeds, with Hart slotted at No. 2, Altick No. 5 and Miller No. 7. Bolton (No. 10) and Broomfield (No. 16) are also seeded among the top players in the Southwest region. Three of the top five doubles teams, meanwhile, come from UCLA. Hart-Bolton comes in at No. 3 while Altick-Miller and Andrews-Broomfield follow, respectively.
It was a hot start to the fall season for Hart-Bolton, which advanced through the qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships with three wins. Once there, the pair knocked off Duke's Meible Chi-Kaitlyn McCarthy, 8-4, before bowing out in the Round of 16 in a thriller. Bolton-Hart holds a 4-1 record and is ranked No. 29 by Oracle/ITA. The freshman Bolton has also won three of her first five singles decisions.
LaFrance will make her UCLA debut in San Diego.
