Bruins Face No. 10 Huskies in Pac-12 Home Opener

UCLA (0-4, 0-1) returns to the Rose Bowl to host 10th-ranked Washington (4-1, 2-0) in a Pac-12 Conference matchup on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised by FOX and the Pac-12 Networks' "The Pregame" show will be on hand. The Bruin IMG Radio Network will broadcast the contest, which will also be aired over Sirius/XM, 97.3 FM THE FAN, uclabruins.com, tunein.com and TuneIn App. It will be the fourth time since 2010 (2013 home win, 2014 away W, 2017 away L) that the two teams have met on the gridiron. The Bruins have captured the last eight meetings played in the Rose Bowl.
Eight distinguished Bruins will be recognized at the game after their induction on Friday into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. The members of the Class of 2018 are: Nikki Blue (women's basketball), Kevin Chappell (men's golf), Lynn "Buck" Compton (baseball/football), Larry Farmer (men's basketball), Amanda Freed (softball), Jenny Johnson Jordan (women's volleyball), Eric Lindroth (men's water polo),and Stella Sampras Webster (women's tennis). The class includes seven Bruins who have totaled 12 NCAA Championships between them as either a player or coach (Chappell, Farmer, Freed, Johnson Jordan, Lindroth and Sampras Webster); three Olympians (Freed, Johnson Jordan and Lindroth); and a World War II hero (Compton).
Washington and the Bruins met last season in Seattle (Oct. 28) and UW prevailed 44-23. The Huskies rushed for 333 yards, building on a 20-9 halftime time lead, with 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to complete a run of 27 straight points. Josh Rosen threw for 93 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Darren Andrews made eight catches for the Bruins, including a four-yard scoring pass, to move into fourth on the all-time school receiving list. Osa Odighizuwa raced 51 yards with a fumble recovery for the final score of the game.
The teams last met in Pasadena (Nov. 15, 2013) on a Friday night. Myles Jack became the 13th Bruin, and first since Maurice Jones-Drew, to run for four touchdowns in a 41-31 Bruin win. Brett Hundley threw for a couple of scores (Devin Lucien, Cassius Marsh) in a game UCLA went up 27-7 in the first half.
First-year head coach Chip Kelly was named UCLA's head football coach on Nov. 25, 2017. Kelly compiled a 46-7 record in four seasons as the head coach at the University of Oregon (2009-12). During that span, his Duck teams captured first place or a share of first in the North Division of the conference (three outright conference championships 2009-11) and four BCS bowl games. Kelly guided Oregon to appearances in a National Championship Game (2010), two Rose Bowls (after 2011 and 2009 seasons) and the Fiesta Bowl following the 2012 season. He also has served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (2016) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-15).
