Four Bruins Wrap at SoCal Intercollegiates
October 29, 2018 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ Four members of the UCLA men's tennis team were in action over the weekend, as USC hosted the 62nd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on campus. Qualifying rounds began Friday, with the finals still to be played.
There was Bruin representation in both the singles and doubles main draws. Freshman Eric Hahn, who reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships previously, took it a step further this go-around, while the team of Bryce Pereira and Max Wild made the final eight in doubles play.
Redshirt sophomore Connor Rapp and freshman Wild each had a steep road to the singles main draw with the tournament's qualifying round standing in the way. Wild's opening match was a nail biter, but the Murrieta, Calif. native pushed through, tallying a 7-6, 6-7, 10-5 win over Justin Bloss of Texas Tech. The next match proved slightly easier for Wild, who defeated Roberto Luconi of Azusa Pacific, 7-5, 6-2, for a berth in the main draw. Rapp, who earned a first-round bye in qualifying action, also notched a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-2 over Armin Rostami of San Diego, to take a spot.
Wild was pitted against the tournament's No. 2 seed, Sameer Kumar of Stanford, to open main-draw play. That is where the freshman's journey would end, as Kumar recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win to advance. Rapp was forced to retire from his match against Texas Tech's Bjorn Thomson, leaving it up to Hahn.
The Fullerton, Calif. native, seeded seventh, knocked off Cal Poly's Antoine Noel, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, to reach the Round of 16. There, Hahn dropped the first set to Victor Krustev of UC Santa Barbara, as the Gaucho first-year player moved within a set of victory. Hahn responded emphatically, though, surrendering just two games the rest of the way for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory. The quarterfinal round would represent the end of the road for Hahn, though, who dropped his final decision to top-seeded Daniel Cukierman of USC, 6-2, 6-3.
The lone Bruin main-draw pair in doubles play was the unseeded team of Pereira and Wild. Pereira, who made his fall debut at Regionals alongside fellow sophomore Keegan Smith, matched that performances with another round-of-eight showing. Pereira-Wild doubled up the BYU combination of Brocton Andrus and David Ball, 8-4, to advance. That set up a showdown with USC's fourth-seeded pair of Bradley Frye-Jack Jaede on the Trojans' home court. The Bruins pushed their crosstown counterparts, but ultimately came up just short in an 8-6 decision.
