Men's Tennis Beats Purdue, Completing Big Ten Road Sweep
March 08, 2026 | Men's Tennis
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. โ The UCLA men's tennis team completed a two-match road sweep to open Big Ten Conference play Sunday, beating Purdue 6-1 at Schwartz Tennis Center. UCLA clinched the win at 4-0.
Aadarsh Tripathi delivered the fourth point. Also victorious for the Bruins (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) in singles play were Cassius Chinlund, Andy Nguyen, Rudy Quan and Emon van Loben Sels. Quan and van Loben Sels had two-win days. With his doubles triumph, van Loben Sels reached 100 career wins across singles and doubles. Nour Fathalla prevailed in his singles contest for the Boilermakers (4-7).
UCLA jumped out to a quick start thanks to Quan and Bengt Reinhard on Court 3. The pair broke the serve of Jacob Lee/Juan David Velasquez out of the gate and never looked back en route to a 6-0 victory. The Bruin duo of van Loben Sels/Gianluca Ballotta then bounced back from its first and only loss this season to beat Nikola Jovic/Maj Premzl 6-4 and clinch the first point.
UCLA claimed four first sets in singles play. Three straight-set wins followed, starting with No. 35 van Loben Sels' 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Stefan Simeunovic on Court 3. Andy Nguyen followed by taking down Premzl 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4.
Tripathi faced a 2-5 second-set deficit opposite Velasquez on Court 5. The Bruin would rebound to force a tiebreaker, where he again found himself behind. He ultimately overcame a pair of set points to post the decider by a 6-4, 7-6(6) margin.
No. 104 Quan added to the lead with his 7-6(6), 6-3 display versus Henrik Villanger. Quan has won seven consecutive singles matches and is 8-1 in dual play and 13-2 overall.
Purdue got on the scoreboard when Fathalla outlasted No. 57 Spencer Johnson 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3 on Court 1. Chinlund then completed a comeback on Court 6, knocking off Lee 2-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 and improving his dual singles record to 7-2 (11-3 overall).
UCLA returns to Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday to face crosstown rival USC. First serve in the Big Ten faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
