Bruins Burn Sun Devils, 3-1

October 04, 2018 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - No. 15 UCLA scored a goal in the second minute and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over Arizona State on Thursday. Maricarmen Reyes, Anika Rodriguez and Ashley Sanchez each scored goals, and Chloe Castaneda added two assists.

The game was barely a minute old when Reyes put UCLA up, 1-0, with her third goal of the season. Castaneda set it up with a strong individual effort to send the ball back to an open Reyes, who settled and fired a shot to the far post for the goal.

Rodriguez doubled the lead in the 17th minute with a long-distance shot to the right post that just eluded Arizona State goalkeeper Sydney Day. Castaneda picked up the assist on the goal, which was Rodriguez's third in the last two games.

UCLA (7-3-1, 2-2-0 in the Pac-12) nearly scored another in the 29th minute when Olivia Athens' shot got past Day and was trickling towards goal. Madison Wolf, however, cleared the ball just before it fully crossed the goal line.

The Bruins did get that third goal in the 61st on a spectacular effort from Sanchez. The Bruin sophomore stole the ball and then juked her defender to get a clean shot at goal. Day got a hand on the hard shot, but it was not nearly enough to stop it from going into the back of the net for Sanchez's third goal of the year.

Arizona State (6-4-1, 1-2-1) got on the board in the 73rd minute on a give-and-go between Jemma Purfield and Eva Van Deursen that resulted in Purfield's first goal of the year, but the Bruin defense stayed strong to take the 3-1 win.

The Bruins outshot the Sun Devils, 16-9. Goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy picked up the victory, making three saves. Day had two saves for the Sun Devils.

UCLA will next face Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 3pm in the second game of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
