UCLA Athletics has recorded a school-best Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90% – a rate that exceeds the national average of 88% for Division I schools. The 2018 GSR cohort is based on scholarship student-athletes who entered college as freshmen or transfers in the 2008-09 through 2011-12 classes.
Six Bruin squads – men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's gymnastics, softball and women's tennis - had a GSR of 100 percent. All six of those teams finished fifth or higher at last year's NCAA Championships, led by the national champion gymnastics team. Eighteen of the 20 programs had a GSR of 80 percent or higher, and 14 of the 20 were at 90 percent or higher. (UCLA has 25 sports; for this report, cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field are counted as one sport, and beach volleyball did not begin until 2013).
"At UCLA, on a campus with no shortage of achievements, this one stands out for a number of reasons," said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. "Reaching such a high Graduation Success Rate is a testament to a long-term vision, a lot of hard work, and constant collaboration between our academic & student services staff, our coaching staffs, and of course, our student-athletes. I'm incredibly proud of this accomplishment, and know we will continue to strive for excellence, both athletically and academically."
The GSR is the NCAA's more comprehensive calculation of student-athlete academic success. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally-mandated methodology because it is more inclusive of the total student-athlete population. The GSR includes incoming transfers and students enrolling in the winter or spring quarters who receive athletics aid. Student-athletes who leave an institution academically and athletically eligible to compete are removed from their respective cohorts.
