Bruins Advance to NCAA Third Round after 5-0 Win over Minnesota

November 16, 2018 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Ashley Sanchez set a new school record with four assists as No. 2 seed UCLA defeated Minnesota, 5-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Five different players scored goals as the Bruins outshot the Golden Gophers by a 21-4 count. UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah made two saves while earning her seventh solo shutout of the year.

The Bruins (16-3-1) wasted no time getting on the board. At the 3:16 mark, Chloe Castaneda took a pass from Viviana Villacorta and shot left-footed past Minnesota goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen for her fifth goal of the season.

Sanchez took over from there, assisting on UCLA's next four goals. In the 28th minute, Sanchez's cross into the box was batted away by Nielsen, and Olivia Athens cleaned up the rebound, chipping it in over the goalkeeper. Sanchez attacked down the right side again to set up UCLA's third goal in the 35th minute, sending a cross to Hailie Mace, whose diving header hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in for the 3-0 advantage.

The Bruins took a three-goal lead and a 14-0 shot advantage into halftime and very quickly almost made it 4-0 in the 47th minute when Athens' header hit the crossbar. Julia Hernandez earned that fourth goal in the 70th minute, beating Nielsen one-on-one on a breakaway. Sanchez and Athens earned assists on the play. Kennedy Faulknor rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute, knocking in the rebound off a Sanchez shot that was saved.

Sanchez has scored a point in each of the last 11 games, all UCLA victories. She leads the team in all scoring categories with 10 goals, 12 assists and 32 points.

UCLA, which has won 11 straight, advances to Sunday's NCAA third round game. The Bruins will host NC State, who moved on after winning a penalty kick shootout against Santa Clara, at 6pm at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Minnesota ends its season with a 12-9-2 record.
