No. 23 UCLA Dominates Glass in 78-62 Win Over Seton Hall

November 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 23 UCLA women's basketball team outrebounded previously-unbeaten Seton Hall by 21, ultimately resulting in a 78-62 triumph for the Bruins on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

Senior Japreece Dean buried four three's en route to scoring a season-high 20 points, while sophomore Michaela Onyenwere added 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting to go along with nine rebounds.

In 18 minutes off the bench, sophomore Lauryn Miller recorded a career-high 12 points, while senior Kennedy Burke had a complete game with 10 points, five boards and a season-high six assists.

The Storyline
After starting 0-for-3, UCLA (3-1) hit its next six from the field and forced four turnovers to go up 15-8 at the media timeout of the first quarter. The Bruins issued a balanced attack offensively in the opening 10 minutes, getting contributions from six different players, to take a 21-14 lead into the second frame.

Dean scored the Bruins' first eight points of the second quarter, knocking down back-to-back three's before finishing on the break thanks to a heads-up play by Burke to extend UCLA's lead to 12 (29-17). Seton Hall managed to trim the Bruin lead to eight (30-22), but Dean fired back with the answer on a pull-up jumper to push the lead back to double figures.

UCLA entered the locker room up 10 (41-31), outshooting Seton Hall 50 percent (15-for-30) to 39.4 percent (13-for-33), thanks in large part to Dean, who posted 15 first-half points on 5-for-7 shooting.

The third quarter was all UCLA, as the Bruins hauled in the first 14 rebounds of the frame to balloon its advantage on the glass to 20 (36-16). That effort reaped benefits on the scoreboard, as UCLA opened the quarter with a 13-2 run to go up 54-33 after a drive to the hoop by senior Lajahna Drummer.

Onyenwere opened the fourth frame with back-to-back and-ones, and then Dean connected on her fourth triple of the day to give the Bruins their largest lead (65-39) of the affair with 8:34 left to play.

Seton Hall (4-1) got as close as 15 (71-56) down the stretch, but UCLA kept the Pirates at bay, capping its scoring with a three-pointer by redshirt senior Chrissy Baird.
