UCLA Women’s Basketball Falls to North Carolina

November 22, 2018 | Women's Basketball

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Despite a season-high-tying 21 points from senior Kennedy Burke, the UCLA women's basketball team dropped an 83-49 decision to North Carolina on Thursday night at the Paradise Jam.

For Burke, it marked her fourth 20-plus point performance of her career, and she also connected on a season-high three triples. One of four Bruin seniors, Lajahna Drummer collected five points and a season-high 10 rebounds, her 14th career game with double-figure rebounds.

The Storyline
UCLA (3-2) struggled to find the bottom of the net early, while the Tar Heels hit eight of their first 12 shots from the floor to go up double figures (18-8) midway through the first frame. But between 14 combined points between Burke and redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro, the Bruins clawed their way back to within six (25-19), as Burke drilled a three and then came up with a block to cap the quarter.

The Bruins managed to hang around in the second stanza, getting a floater from senior Japreece Dean to cut the deficit to five (35-30), but the Tar Heels scored the final nine points of the first half to go up 44-30, giving UCLA its largest deficit all season.

Offensive struggles continued into the third quarter for UCLA. After the Bruins got a left-handed score by Burke on their first possession, they were held scoreless for the next four minutes, allowing UNC to stretch its lead to 19 (51-32). The gap grew to 29 (63-34) before Burke eclipsed the 20-point mark with a three-pointer on the right wing.

North Carolina (4-1) took a 67-42 advantage into the third quarter, and although UCLA held a double-digit edge on the glass, the Bruins ultimately dropped their first contest in four games.

Key Stats of the Game
