UCLA head softball coach Kelly Inouye-Perez has announced the Bruins' 2019 recruiting class, as Maya Brady (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/OC Batbusters), Seneca Curo (Barona, Calif./Ramona HS/Athletics Mercado), Alyssa Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic HS/Firecrackers) and Lexi Sosa (Carmel Valley, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic HS/Athletics Mercado) have signed their National Letters of Intent.
ย
"We have been able to recruit true Bruins who represent the four letters both on the field and in the classroom," Inouye-Perez said. "This 2019 class has all the tools that will impact our lineup and carry on our tradition of excellence. I would like to take a moment to recognize (assistant coach) Lisa Fernandez, who is in charge of recruiting for our program. Lisa recruits athletes who understand that playing in the Women's College World Series and competing for a national title is an amazing experience, and the value of the UCLA degree does make a difference beyond the white lines."
ย
Brady, a 5-10, left-handed middle infielder, is the No. 2-ranked recruit according to FloSoftball. Last season, she was named First Team CalHiSports.com All-State, MaxPreps 2018 High School Underclass Softball All-American, Marmonte League Most Valuable Player, First Team All-Marmonte League and Second Team Extra Inning Softball All-American, helping Oaks Christian HS advance to the second round of the CIF playoffs under coach Pete Ackermann. She hit .519 as a junior with 10 home runs, 32 runs batted in, 10 doubles, 28 stolen bases and a .971 fielding percentage. Brady plays travel ball with Orange County Batbusters under coach Mike Stith.
ย
"I am thrilled to have Maya wearing the four letters for UCLA softball," Inouye-Perez said. "Maya has tremendous athletic ability in all parts of her game. She can hit for power from the left side and has plus speed to take extra bases. Maya has great range in the infield with a smooth glove and quick transition. She will follow the tradition of competitive excellence that her mom, Maureen, had as a standout Division I softball player at Fresno State."
ย
"I chose UCLA because of the winning culture and tradition," Brady said. "I love the coaches and the team atmosphere."
ย
Curo, a 5-7, right-handed hitting shortstop, has been named First Team All-Valley North County League the last three seasons, as well as First Team All-CIF as a sophomore and Second Team All-CIF as a junior. She hit 10 home runs in each of her last two seasons, driving in 32 with a .427 average and 14 stolen bases as a junior. Last season, she was CalHiSports Second Team All-State Underclass, and under coach Lexi Slater, Curo helped Ramona HS to the CIF Open Championship final as a sophomore. An All-Academic Team captain as a junior at RHS, Curo plays travel ball with Athletics Mercado under coaches Dave Mercado, Mark Smith and Brian Pilon.
ย
"Seneca is our diamond in the rough athlete," Inouye-Perez said. "We instantly saw athletic ability and consistent composure with her style of play. She has continued to improve each year with her offense, defense and leadership on the field. Seneca is a solid team player who will make all those around her better. We look forward to having Seneca in our lineup, as she will bring great versatility and work ethic to play any position on the field."
ย
"The coaches and staff made me feel like family from the moment I walked on campus," Curo said as to why she decided to attend UCLA.
ย
Garcia, a 5-9, left-handed hitting catcher/first baseman, has been a First Team All-Metro Mesa League representative all three seasons, while also being named League Player of the Year as a sophomore under coach Mike Centrullo at Mater Dei Catholic. Last season, Garcia hit .397 with a pair of homers and 12 RBI despite missing the first two months of the season with an injury, committing just one error in 138 chances for a .993 fielding percentage. She was invited to the USA Junior National Team selection camp this upcoming December. Garcia plays travel ball with Firecrackers under coaches Tony Rico and Rob Weil, hitting 20 homers this summer and fall.
ย
"Alyssa has developed into one of the most feared hitters in 18U travel ball," Inouye-Perez said. "She has a beautiful swing and hits for power from the left side. She can hit to all fields for power, which allows her to hit for high average as well. Alyssa is a higher-level quarterback behind the plate with a high softball IQ. I believe she will impact our lineup immediately, and will also gain USA experience later this year at the Junior National Team tryout."
ย
"I chose UCLA for many reasons such as the academic and sports programs, and social life," Garcia said. "The Bruin Bubble is something I want to be a part of because it is family oriented."
ย
Sosa, a 5-10, right-handed pitcher and hitter, is teammates with Garcia at Mater Dei Catholic. She was All-Metro Mesa League Most Valuable Player and All-CIF San Diego last season, helping MDCHS to back-to-back league titles. Sosa, a two-time All-League and Michelle Carew Classic All-Tournament honoree, hit .354 as a junior with six home runs and 28 runs batted in. In the circle, she had 21 wins, six saves and 226 strikeouts in 200 innings combined during her sophomore and junior seasons. Sosa plays travel ball with Curo and Athletics Mercado. She was the MVP of a game at the 2016 World Series, helping the A's to a PGF title.
ย
"We knew from an early age that Lexi would carry on our tradition of some of the best two-way players in the game," Inouye-Perez said. "Lexi is a power pitcher in the high 60s and has competed for championships at the travel ball level. She also swings it at the plate and can hit for plus power in every at-bat. Lexi can play the infield, as her athletic ability continues to improve with her work ethic and mindset to be the best in all she does."
ย
"UCLA has been my dream school for as long as I can remember," Sosa said. "The school is close to home which played an important factor in my decision."
