Four Bruins Receive All-Region Honors

November 26, 2018 | Women's Soccer

Four UCLA women's soccer players have earned All-Pacific Region honors by the United Soccer Coaches. Forward Ashley Sanchez received first-team honors for the second-straight year. Defender Karina Rodriguez earned second-team honors, and defender Hailie Mace and midfielder Jessie Fleming also received second-team acclaim in an abbreviated season.

Sanchez, a sophomore from Monrovia, Calif., had a record-setting 2018 campaign with five school records. She tied the school record for assists in a season with 15 and set new UCLA standards for single-game assists (four), consecutive games with a goal or assist (13 and counting), assists in an NCAA Tournament (seven) and career NCAA Tournament assists (11). Sanchez finished the season leading the Bruins in all scoring categories with 10 goals, 15 assists and 35 points. She ranks second in the nation in total assists and 12th in total points. Sanchez earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors for the second consecutive season.

Rodriguez, a sophomore from Torrance, Calif., receives her first all-region honor after leading the Bruin defense to 12 shutouts and a 0.75 team goals against average. One of just two Bruin players to start every game this season, Rodriguez led UCLA in minutes played with 1,978 minutes, playing in all but 57 minutes this year. She also added three goals and an assist from the center back position. Rodriguez earned third-team all-conference honors and was a two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Mace, a senior from Ventura, Calif., missed most of the early season while playing with the U.S. Women's National Team but still produced big numbers, recording nine goals and six assists for 24 points in just 13 games. Upon her return to Westwood from World Cup qualifying, where she earned her first career start, she moved into a left back position and scored seven goals, including four in the NCAA Tournament. Mace was a second-team all-conference selection this season and was a first-team All-American a year ago.

Fleming, a junior from London, Ontario, Canada, missed half the season while leading the Canadian Women's National Team to a 2019 World Cup berth but also had a productive NCAA season, recording five goals and five assists for 15 points in 11 games. She also had three game-winning goals, tied with Mace for most on the team. Fleming, a two-time All-American and a finalist for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy, received first-team All-Pac-12 honors this season for the third consecutive year. At the CONCACAF Women's Championship in October, she was selected to the Best XI of the tournament.
