Nine Bruins Earn Pac-12 All-Academic Honors

Nine members of the UCLA women's soccer team received Pac-12 All-Academic honors this season, led by two-time second-team honoree Julia Hernandez.

Hernandez, a senior forward from Madrid, Spain, repeats as a second-team selection. She holds a 3.81 cumulative GPA in Applied Mathematics and is expected to graduate this spring. Hernandez played in all 22 games for the Bruins this season and scored four goals with three assists for 11 points. She finished her three-year career at UCLA with 26 points (11 goals, 4 assists). Hernandez is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and two-time UCLA All-Academic team member.

Earning honorable mention All-Academic acclaim are sophomore midfielder Olivia Athens (physiological science), sophomore midfielder Marley Canales (pre-psychology), junior defender/forward Sunny Dunphy (physiological science), junior midfielder Jessie Fleming (materials engineering), junior defender Kaiya McCullough (political science), junior goalkeeper Teagan Micah (psychology), junior defender Jacey Pederson (sociology) and sophomore Karina Rodriguez (undeclared). Dunphy, Fleming, McCullough, Micah and Pederson received their second career Pac-12 academic honors, while Athens, Canales and Rodriguez are first-time honorees.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

UCLA has had seven or more student-athletes selected to the All-Academic team every year since 2012.

The Bruins have thrived academically under head coach Amanda Cromwell. Her teams have earned United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards every year since she began in 2013-14 and for seven consecutive years. The 2016-17 team received the UCLA Athletics Most Improved Team GPA award and was runner-up for the Highest Team GPA Award for large teams. This season, two Bruins earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors (Hernandez and Dunphy).
