Sophomore midfielder Olivia Athens of the UCLA women's soccer team has been named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 29-Nov. 4.
Athens headed in the game-winning goal in double overtime as No. 6 UCLA came from behind twice to defeat No. 2 USC, 3-2, in the regular season finale. Athens scored in the 105th minute, taking a chip from Jessie Fleming and popping it over the USC goalkeeper into the back of the net for her third goal of the year. The win catapulted UCLA into second place in the conference and ended USC's hopes of winning a conference title. The victory, UCLA's ninth consecutive overall and third in a row over USC, also helped the Bruins obtain a No. 2 national seed in the NCAA tournament, which begins Friday.
This is Athens' first career UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week award.
