December 03, 2018 | Women's Tennis

GRENOBLE, France – UCLA women's tennis redshirt junior Jada Hart helped second-seeded Team USA to the Master'U BNP Paribas title Sunday, giving the Americans their eighth in 10 tries at the event. The Americans represented one of eight nations in a talented field that has been dubbed "The World Event of University Tennis."

Joining Hart on the US roster were fellow collegiate tennis players Oliver Crawford (Florida), Brandon Holt (USC), Ashley Lahey (Pepperdine), Maria Mateas (Duke) and Emil Reinberg (Georgia). The players were guided by head coach Greg Patton (Boise State) and assistants Amanda Augustus (Caifornia) and Garrett Patton (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo).

Hart played a pivotal role in the final-round conquest over defending-champion and top Jada Hart (Photo: Etienne Jeanneret)seed Great Britain, teaming up with Mateas to register the deciding three-set women's doubles decision. Over the course of the three-day tournament, Hart turned in a 3-0 women's doubles record with Mateas and a 2-1 mixed doubles mark with two partners.

Friday, Team USA made quick work of Belgium, sweeping all four singles matches to come out on top in the best-of-seven format. Doubles matches were still played, however, and Hart-Mateas kept the Americans rolling with an 8-3 win over Mathilde Devits and Chelsea Vanhoutte. For good measure, Hart and Reinberg knocked off Jakob Kevelaerts and Davis, 8-5, to complete the 6-1 overall victory.

USA dropped its first two sets of singles play Saturday, but still clinched a spot in the final by winning all four matches against Ireland. Doubles started much the same, as Hart and Mateas pushed the American advantage to 6-0 with an 8-1 triumph over Amy Bowtell and Sinead Lohan. The Irish finally broke through in the day's last match, as Hart and Brandon Holt of USC fell to Dan Moloney and Julie Byrne, 8-4. Team USA still advanced into a rematch of the 2017 final against Great Britain.

The Americans suffered their first singles loss of the trip against the British, but still managed to squeeze by with the advantage heading into doubles play. There, Hart and Mateas got off to a slow start against Maia Lumsden-Laura Sainsbury and never had it easy. The pair from Great Britain recorded a 6-0 first set and saw Hart-Mateas near defeat in the second. The Americans showed resiliency, though, evening the set score at one apiece thanks to a 7-6 (7) tiebreaking win that including four saved match points. With a super tiebreaker standing in the way of Team USA and the title, Hart and Mateas prevailed with a 10-8 victory that set off a storming of the court by the American contingent.

Hart and the Bruins will begin the dual-match portion of the schedule on Jan. 26, when they welcome FIU, Loyola Marymount and Minnesota to Los Angeles Tennis Center for ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
