The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team had its seven match win streak snapped at top-ranked Long Beach State in a non-league battle on Saturday night in Walter Pyramid before a sellout crowd of over 4,500 fans. Scores of the match were 25-23, 15-25, 19-25, 21-25. Long Beach State, now 13-0 on the year, became just the second team this season to hit for a higher percentage (.343 to .191) than UCLA and the first to out block (8.0 to 5.5) the Bruins this season. UCLA, now 14-2 on the year, will host the 49ers on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion at 7:30 p.m.
UCLA broke up an early see-saw affair by taking an 8-6 lead after a kill by JT Hatch and a service error. Long Beach came back to even the score at 9-all. The next three points belonged to UCLA after kills by Dylan Missry, Micah Ma'a and an attack error. The 49ers fought back to even the score at 15 and then went ahead 15-16. UCLA ran off three straight points, after Long Beach had taken a 18-19 lead, on a Daenan Gyimah kill and a couple of attack errors to regain the lead. Jake Arnitz' kill made it 23-21 and an ace by Gyimah took it to set point. Long Beach fought off a couple of set points before Christian Hessenauer's sixth kill of the set handed UCLA the 25-23 win.
The Bruins jumped out to a 3-1 lead to begin the second set. Long Beach came back to even the score at 4-all. UCLA went up 8-6 following kills by Gyimah and Hatch and led 9-8 after a service error.
