No. 3 UCLA Opens the Season with a Split

The Bruins defeated #17 Stanford, 5-0 and fell at #3 Hawai'i, 5-0, in Honolulu at the Rainbow Classic.

HONOLULU -- No. 3 UCLA (1-0) opened the 2018 season with a 5-0 sweep of No. 17 Stanford (0-2) at the Rainbow Classic at Ching Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Bruins didn't drop a set to the Cardinal on the day. Sophomores Chanti Holroyd and Savvy Simo got things started with a win over Stanford's Kat Anderson and Caitlin Keefe, 21-17, 21-12.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead when senior Elise Zappia and Madi Yeomans took down Stanford's Payton Chang and Catherine Raquel in straight sets, 21-16, 21-17.

Freshman Megan Muret and junior Izzy Carey defeated the Cardinal's Kate Formico and Courtney Bowen in straight sets, 21-18, 21-11 to give UCLA the dual victory.

On court one, UCLA's junior pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara won in straight sets over Stanford's Kathryn Plummer and Sunny Villapando, 21-14, 21-16.

Junior Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine got the win on court two over Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, 21-17, 21-13, to complete the 5-0 sweep.

UCLA (1-1) dropped its first match of the year at #5 Hawai'i (2-0) and only took two sets off the Rainbow Wahine on the day.

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead after Paige Dreeuws and Hannah Zalopany defeated the Bruins' Chanti Holroyd and Savvy Simo on court five, 21-15, 24-22.

The Rainbows took a 2-0 lead on court three when Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse defeated Elise Zappia and Madi Yeomans in straight sets, 21-7, 21-11.

Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee of Hawai'i beat Megan Muret and Izzy Carey in a tight affair, 21-17, 15-21, 15-13 to give the 'Bows the dual victory.

On court two, Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht defeated UCLA's Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine, 21-19, 21-13.

Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver rallied for a 20-22, 21-15, 15-10 win on court one over UCLA's Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara to clinch a 5-0 sweep.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow to do it all over again. UCLA will face Stanford at 12:00 p.m. PT and then take on Hawai'i at 3:00 p.m. PT.
