No. 9 UCLA Downs No. 34 Cal, 5-2

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team passed its first test against a Pac-12 opponent Saturday, dispatching No. 34 California by a 5-2 score at Los Angeles Tennis Center. While the match did not count toward the conference standings, it improved the Bruins' overall record to 8-2. The Golden Bears dropped to 4-3.
Jada Hart provided the clinching decision for the Bruins, who recorded the first five points of the afternoon before Cal took the final two.
Midway through doubles play, all three courts were knotted at three games apiece. While the Court 2 match between No. 24 Ayan Broomfield-Gabby Andrews and Cal's Anna Bright-Vivian Glozman stayed closely contested, the Bruin pairs on Courts 1 and 3 took charge. No. 38 Terri Fleming-Hart won the next three games to knock off Olivia Hauger and Julia Rosenqvist on Court 1, 6-3, and complete the first match of the day. Seconds later, Ena Shibahara and Alaina Miller clinched the doubles point for the Bruins with a 6-3 in of their own, as the pair took care of Jasie Dunk and Maria Smith on Court 3.
No. 99 Alaina Miller topped Hana Mraz in straight sets on Court 6, 6-1, 6-4, to double the Bruin advantage. In a matchup of Top-30 players, No. 11 Ena Shibahara of the Bruins handled No. 29 Anna Bright with a straight-set win of her own, 6-3, 6-3. On the next court over, meanwhile, No. 59 Hart took care of No. 42 Hauger6-3, 6-1, to clinch the match.
For good measure, No. 40 Abi Altick added another straight-set win, 6-4, 6-1 over Glozman, to push the Bruin lead to 5-0. The Golden Bears eventually broke through on Court 3, where Rosenqvist defeated No. 73 Fleming in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. On Court 4, Ayan Broomfield went to a third-set tiebreak against Cal's Maria Smith to decide the final match. Smith would come out victorious, topping Broomfield by a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (6) score.
Next up for the Bruins is a Friday, March 2 visit across town to take on No. 48 USC. Play from Marks Tennis Stadium will begin at 1:30 p.m.
