COLUMBUS, Ohio โ The fourth-seeded UCLA women's tennis team was outlasted by No. 1 seed Ohio State in a 4-2 decision Saturday at Auer Tennis Complex. The Buckeyes advance to Sunday's Big Ten Tournament championship match with their win.
The Bruins (16-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead and later tied the score at 2-2 when Mayu Crossley delivered a career-high ranked victory. Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev, Nao Nishino, Luciana Perry and clincher Audrey Spencer earned singles wins for Ohio State (23-3).
UCLA's top two pairs collected the doubles point with ranked victories. No. 33 Olivia Center/Kate Fakih downed No. 32 Perry/Flora Johnson 6-2 on Court 1 to establish the edge. Both of the remaining matches reached 5-5 scores. Crossley/Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer closed strong, though, for a 7-5 triumph over No. 27 Teah Chavez/Hephzibah Oluwadare on Court 2.
The Buckeyes shifted momentum by claiming four singles first sets. No. 76 Nishino pulled them level with a 6-1, 6-0 performance opposite Bianca Fernandez on Court 4. Ohio State then took its first lead when No. 4 Perry topped No. 18 Lutkemeyer 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1.
No. 51 Crossley picked up her first career top-five singles win to tie the score once again. The freshman's 6-1, 6-3 display versus No. 5 Chavez was her 11th win in as many decisions. All have come in straight sets.
No. 124 Cisse-Ignatiev prevented a third set on Court 3, taking down Fakih 6-0, 7-6(4). Ahmani Guichard of the Bruins was up one set and in a tiebreaker on Court 6, but No. 122 Spencer got past Center 7-6(4), 6-4 on Court 5 to decide the team result.
UCLA now turns its attention toward the NCAA tournament selection show, which is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m. PT on NCAA.com. First-round play begins Friday, May 1.
