February 28, 2018 | Women's Rowing
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's rowing program will open its spring season against Stanford and San Diego State on Saturday, March 3, at the Marina Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey, Calif.
The Bruins return a veteran nucleus led by eight seniors, including Sierra Bronkhorst, Sophia Denison-Johnston, Hannah Elder, Jasmine English, Mikayla Hart, Alexandra Rusbarsky, Bailey Wood and KC Yeagley.
Also back for UCLA this spring are several juniors who represented their countries in the Under 23 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, last summer. Saskia Budgett and Kyra Edwards helped Great Britain win the gold medal in the 2017 event in the 4x. In addition, Carlisle Wheeler earned a spot on the USRowing Under 23 National Team that rowed in Bulgaria.
"We're looking forward to getting our season started," head coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. "It's been great working with this group in the fall and the winter, and our rowers have really bought into what we're trying to do as a program."
Saturday's races against Stanford and San Diego State will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Bruins will race a novice eight crew at 9:30, with the third varsity eight race to take place at 9:45 a.m. The second varsity four race will take place at 10 a.m., with the second varsity eight to follow at 10:15 a.m. and the varsity eight at 10:30 a.m.
"We'll be going up against two very formidable opponents in Stanford and San Diego State," Fuller Kearney said. "Last season, Stanford finished with the nation's second best varsity eight boat. When you talk about San Diego State, that's a team that has done a great job building their program the last several seasons."
"Our races this Saturday will provide us with a great opportunity to put together our first 2000-meter race. We don't have any lineups that are set, and we're not near the speed that we are going to eventually get to. But I know we're all excited to see where we stand as a team, and Saturday will be a fantastic opportunity."
Other upcoming home races for UCLA will take place against Loyola Marymount (scrimmage) on Saturday, March 10 and versus Oregon State on Saturday, March 17.
