MVB Sweeps MPSF Opener

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team opened up Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) league play with a sweep at Concordia, Irvine on Thursday night. Scores of the match were 25-18, 28-26, 25-17. The Bruins hit at least .400 for the fourth straight match and improved to 12-1, 1-0 on the season. UCLA will play on Saturday night at No. 10 Grand Canyon (10-2) which has lost to only Hawai'i and UC Irvine this season.

In set one, UCLA moved out to a 5-3 lead on a block by Oliver Martin and Christian Hessenauer. After a kill and an ace by JT Hatch, the Bruins upped the advantage to 9-6. A Jake Arnitz kill made it 11-8. Concordia closed to 12-11, but UCLA answered with the next three points. A Hessenauer swing lifted UCLA to a 18-13 edge. Micah Ma'a went over on two for a 22-15 lead. Kills by Arnitz, Hessenauer and a Concordia error ended the set at 25-18. UCLA hit .462 as a team with Hessenauer totaling five kills for the set.

Concordia snagged a 3-6 lead to begin set two. UCLA was forced to play catch-up and evened the score at points seven through 10. Concordia then rattled off five of the next six points. The Bruins battled back to even the score at 19 on an ace by Ma'a. Another ace, this one by Arnitz, tied the score at 21. CUI tallied the next two points before UCLA tied the score at 24 on a kill by Hessenauer. Concordia then fought off a couple of set points, but a Ma'a kill and a Ma'a / Daenan Gyimah block handed UCLA the set at 28-26.

UCLA took the early lead in set three at 5-3. Concordia came back to go ahead 9-10. The Bruins went back on top after kills by Arnitz and Gyimah for a 12-10 advantage and built up the margin from there. After a Hessenauer block, the lead had grown to 17-13. A kill by freshman Grant Maleski made it 20-14. Another Hessenauer swing and the score was 22-16. Martin's kill and then ace took it to set point where Ma'a finished off the Eagles with a block for a 25-17 win.

Hessenauer led UCLA with 12 kills (.333), two aces and a couple of blocks. Hatch added eight kills (.357), while Martin finished with six kills (.667) and a pair of aces. Ma'a had 36 set assists for the Bruins who hit an even .400 as a team for the match. Arnitz totaled seven kills and Maleski tallied the first kill of his career in set three.
