The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated No. 13-ranked Grand Canyon in four sets in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Friday night in the John Wooden Center. Scores were 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21. The Bruins used a season-high 16.0 total team blocks to help put away the Antelopes and improve their home record this season to 13-1. Sophomore middle Daenan Gyimah led the way with eight blocks, including a career-best two block solos. Christian Hessenauer equaled his career-best with six block assists. Overall, UCLA is now 19-5 and 7-2 in MPSF action.
UCLA used a 5-1 run in set one to move out to a 10-7 advantage. A block by Gyimah, Hessenauer and Dylan Missry delivered the fifth point in the stretch. Grand Canyon closed to 16-13, but UCLA mounted another 5-0 run to take a 21-13 lead. A couple of kills by Gyimah at the end helped UCLA win the set 25-15. The Bruins broke a 5-all tie with kills by Gyimah and Jake Arnitz and enjoyed an 8-5 lead after an ace from Gyimah. Missry followed with a kill and then UCLA grabbed a 23-19 lead on a Gyimah ace. Another Missry kill sent the Bruins to set point and Arnitz dealt the winning blow after an overpass for his fifth kill of the set.
UCLA moved to an 8-6 lead in set three. Grand Canyon evened the score at 8-all and led 8-10 after completing a 0-4 run. The Bruins battled back to level the score at 12-each. However, the next three points went to the Antelopes. UCLA tied the score at 21, but the 'Lopes answered with three straight points and went on to take the set 22-25. UCLA hit .182 with seven errors in the set.
The Bruins tied the score at 8-all after an Oliver Martin block. Martin, Missry and Ma'a teamed up for a block to send UCLA into the lead at 9-8. After a Hessenauer swing for a point, a Martin / Ma'a block lifted the Bruins into an 11-8 advantage. UCLA built the lead to 22-15 after an ace from Hessenauer and led 23-16 following a Martin kill. GCU closed to 23-20 with a late run. A Missry swing made it 24-20 and Hessenauer ended the match with his team-high 16th kill of the night.
