Bruins Sweep on Milestone Day

March 24, 2018 | Women's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team swept a home doubleheader Saturday, scoring wins over No. 14 Long Beach State, 9-4, and No. 12 Hartwick, 15-7. Devin Grab and Lizette Rozeboom each scored the 100th goal of her career in the wins.

Maddie Musselman led the Bruins with five total goals on the day, including a hat trick against the Beach. Grab scored four total goals, while Rozeboom added three.

Grab got scoring started in the opener, finding the back of the net just shy of the midway point of the opening frame in an extra-player situation. Nicole Reynolds added a second power-play goal at 1:34 to double the lead to 2-0. Musselman (7:30), Grace Reego (4:46) and Grab (2:21) built on the Bruin momentum with goals in the second, before Tori Morrissey put Long Beach State on the board with a penalty shot at 2:08.

Musselman netted her second at 5:50 of the third quarter, giving the Bruins a 6-1 lead. Rachel Whitelegge's third goal of the season made it 7-1 (4:25), where it would stay into the fourth. Carlee Kapana's time in the cage came to an end after three, as she left after surrendering just the one goal while tallying four saves. Musselman completed her hat trick at 7:06 of the fourth, before Grab's thirdโ€”and 100th of her careerโ€”extended the Bruin lead to a game-high eight at 9-1. The Beach would score three times down the stretch to cut the final deficit to five.

The Bruins established themselves in the 2-meter spot against Hartwick, as Alexis Angermund (6:50) and Reynolds (1:42) each scored first-quarter goals. Musselman (4:27) also scored in the first. Hannah Storum and the Bruin defense held the Hawks scoreless in the opening quarter. The sophomore goalkeeper tallied two saves in the game's first half before being relieved by freshman Jahmea Bent.

Kelsey Blacker (7:40), Musselman (5:56) and Reego (5:19) quickly doubled the Bruin advantage with three goals over the first 2:41 of the second frame. Charlotte Cottle broke through for Hartwick at 3:57, but it would not take long for Rozeboom to answer on a power play (3:34). Myna Simmons' fifth of the season made it 8-1, but a pair of Hawks scores over the final 1:05 closed the first-half scoring.

Hartwick's momentum would carry into the second half, as Lena Kotanchyan scored two of her four goals (6:11, 4:21) before the Bruins could break through. Grab (2:42) and Halligan (1:20) answered, though, doubling the Hawks up at 10-5.

Rozeboom (7:40), Blacker (4:34) and Emily Skelly (3:57) increased the advantage to a game-high eight at 13-5 before Kotanchyan completed her game-high total (3:32). The Hawks would tack on one more before Rozeboom put a bow on the day with her 100th career goal. Allison Wieseler second goal of the season marked the final one of the day for the Bruins, who improved their record to 20-3 (1-1 in MPSF play).

UCLA will return to MPSF play March 31, when No. 6 Arizona State visits Spieker Aquatics Center for a 5 p.m. start. Pac-12 Networks will provide television coverage. The Bruins and Sun Devils previously met in a Triton Invitational semifinal game, which UCLA captured by a 7-6 score after Rozeboom registered the game winner with 10 seconds remaining.
