
No. 11 UCLA Ends Weekend with 6-1 Win over Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS โ Zach Pettway tossed six innings allowing just one run, while Ryan Kreidler and Jake Hirabayashi each hit RBI-doubles as the No. 11 UCLA baseball team earned its second win of the weekend on Sunday at the DQ Classic/Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge over Minnesota, 6-1, at U.S. Bank Stadium.
With the win, UCLA finished the weekend 2-1 with wins over the host Gophers and Michigan State. Jon Olsen, Michael Toglia and Hirabayashi were named to the All-Tournament team.
Freshman Pettway (3-0) recorded another quality start for the Bruins as he ended the game allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Nick Scheidler and Holden Powell combined to throw 3.0 scoreless innings in relief for the Bruins surrendering just two hits with one strikeout.
Minnesota scored a run in the first inning, but UCLA grabbed its first lead of the game with two runs in the third inning without recording a hit. With runners on first and second, Will McInerny placed a bunt down the third-base line that was picked up by the pitcher but his throw to third base was high and allowed Garrett Mitchell to cross home. After loading the bases, Michael Toglia drew a walk to give UCLA its first lead of the game at 2-1.
The Bruins added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI-double by Kreidler off the center field wall followed by plating one more in the fifth inning with a double down the third-base line off the bat of Hirabayashi for a 4-1 advantage.
UCLA capitalizes on two Minnesota miscues in the sixth inning to score two more runs and go up 6-1. Daniel Amaral led off with a walk and Jack Stronach was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. The Bruins attempted a double steal and the throw to third base went into left field to bring home Amaral, followed by Stronach scoring from third base on a balk for the final run of the game.
Minnesota's Jake Stevenson (0-1) suffered the loss allowing two unearned runs in 2.1 innings of work with two strikeouts.
UCLA (9-2) ended the game with six runs on three hits and no errors, while Minnesota (8-4) finished with one run on seven hits and three errors.
UCLA will return to Los Angeles next week when it hosts Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT before playing in the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic over the weekend. The Bruins will host Vanderbilt and TCU on Friday and Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium and then will face crosstown rival USC at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.
